I have done scriptures on the book before, but I haven't figured out how to color in the v carve. When I do stuff like this, it is always on something flat that I can run through the drum sander and resurface it. What is your secret?

When I have used stain I apply the stain and put a bit more in the v carve area. when I wipe it down I try to leave as much as I can in the vcarve part and it turns out pretty good...that is how I did the circle clocked.... +1. What he said.... I also put on a few coats of thinned shellac first if I don't want a real dark stain. Just keep wiping 'til it looks. The less you let it sit, the easier it is to wipe off.

Gel stains are great for filling in V grooves, as well as highlighting edges of 3d carvings.
