Went heads down last week to get some things done for the kids/grandkids... They've been after me to show them some of the things I been doing on the CNC so I spent a few days making things for them... With them in Texas and us up in the PacNW all they've been getting is photos so decided each would get a carving suited to their personality. For my son who plays in his new shop a lot it was a cool steampunk design that looked a bit industrial...cut in walnut this one proved to be a challenge in a few ways...biggest thing was finding a bit small enough yet strong enough to get inside the gears for deeper clean cuts on the background piping...finished with watco natural then 4 coats of a satin spray lacquer... For my daughter-in-law whose an artist really into day of the dead related stuff it was a "Sugar Skull"...cut from a clear beech full 2x10 this was a nice clean straightforward cut that I left unfinished so she could paint it as she liked... same with the grandson and grand daughter...beech 2x10 with a "Yoda" for him and a cute Dragon for her... They got the package yesterday and seemed pretty stoked...

Fantastic indeed! I really like the dragon. My grand daughters would live something like that.

ric, those are unreal. You are doing some awesome stuff with that machine.
That link is no good, it goes to the transaction. Would you mind sharing what keywords you searched for or how you came across those files?

The "menometer" (steampunk design) is from a guy named "Milonov2018" on ebay...https://www.ebay.com/itm/3d-STL-Model-Relief-clock-for-CNC-Router-Aspire-Artcam/142708351716?hash=item213a14a2e4:g:BAgAAOSwvWVZxCka
He's a little pricier than most others but some of his stuff is visually more complex, files are cleaner and it doesn't look like clipart

Thanks for that gary...guess because I'm logged into eBay my links are different...
Just a heads up re: pricing...ALL of the .stl vendors I've dealt with seem amiable to pretty heavy discounts when purchasing multiples and when you ask...on eBay it's just fill your cart with what you want and "request an invoice"...I always add a note saying "I'm thinking of picking up these 1/2 dozen files if I can get a better deal on them...what can you do?" I've been surprised by discounts of up to 40% but normally get about 25% off...

Ric, I don't have a "Missouri hillbilly" expression to describe the magnificence ( hope that's spelled right) of your work. I was wondering if those cheaper files were any good. Guess you answered that. You are an inspiration to us all. Keep on "truckin".

Thanks Cletus...appreciate the kind words.
FYI: all .stl files are not created equal...I've had good and bad from both ends of the $$$ spectrum...just spent 2 days fiddle-farting with a file I just couldn't get right when someone pointed out the deficiencies in the actual make-up of the file...it was bad and it wasn't cheap...discussing that with the seller now but I learn from every file.
Guess the eventual solution is to start creating our own...looking into software to allow me to do that now but meanwhile yeah... I've had good luck with the ones mentioned above and a few others...Truthfully I just keep making sawdust until I finger it out...

I am going to try out Art Cam... it looks fairly simple and can make really cool stuff with it. But on the .stl files it would be good to find reviews from others to make sure it's not all jacked up.

Well as I've stated before, fusion is free to those of us who don't make enough money playing with our hobbies.... and if you had any questions I'd be glad to answer them. I messed around with something the other day using illustrator then exporting and importing to fusion, it worked well. About to go cut it now.
