Hey guys, I've been meaning to post a lengthy thread about my experiences with this machine and Fusion360. I have now machined enough pieces to forget how many times it has successfully worked for me. Axiom still has not returned my voicemail or emails, so I am glad I was able to find something that works for me since they aren't interested in helping. This piece was designed and created 100% using Fusion360 with the RS-274 post processor. If any of you have the time to learn Fusion I strongly suggest it, it's a really valuable tool. Anyway, this little cigar ashtray is a surprise gift for a friend. It's the first one of it's kind that I have created, I may make minor tweaks to the next one and also going to cut one out of mahogany possibly this weekend. It took me a second to figure out how to get the swirl pattern tool paths, and also created a "knurled" style texture on the top but I like the look. I used a 1/4" flat end mill to rough it out, a 1/4" ball nose to create the swirl and knurled texture, and a 90 degree v bit to carve the text and chamfer the edges. I am happy with the outcome, and will be glad to answer any questions for those of you who are interested in the programming. It is 100% to spec as built in the program, no errors, 2 tool changes... (Sorry for crap phone pics). -Alex

It's actually HDPE plastic. I don't feel like buying or milling aluminum although it would be an awesome part.

Thanks guys -
I'm hoping the plastic doesn't burn too easily, going to give it to a friend who smokes a lot of cigars and have him test it out. HDPE machines really nicely, I use it to create molds frequently and it usually finishes with a glassy smooth surface. I still want to do one out of wood, hopefully this weekend I can get around to that.
Ric you can get it on Amazon, I usually order it Amazon Prime... I milled this out of 1.5" stock.

Yeah it will be cheaper obviously from a local supplier but I don't have one anywhere around so Amazon it is.

Delrin is a plastic that is loved by machinists because it can be machined very easily with a great finish.

I've used/specced delkin for washers on various pieces of photo equipment I've designed over the years (sliders, jibs, cranes, tripods etc) works well in those applications and seems to last forever...Have to see how it would work for these apps...Hmmmm

I love it. I may have to borrow this design and make one of these for my future son in law.

Hi arsystems,
Did you have to modify anything or did you simply process through the RS-274?
Thanks in advance!

Hi arsystems, Did you have to modify anything or did you simply process through the RS-274? Thanks in advance! I taught myself how to use fusion, and how to use a CNC. I don't think I am anywhere skilled enough to be modifying any posts haha. It work as is my friend!! Used it since the day I got my machine, with my fingers crossed and it has done well.
