I had a previous post about achieving fine detail and here is a picture of my final effort just off the machine. The parameters: Rough Cut with a 3/16 end mill at 18,000 rpm, 0.1" pass depth. 125 ipm feed rate, stepover 0.0544": Final Cut with a 1/16 ball point mill at 18,00 ipm, 100 ipm feed rate, and stepover at 0.0056". 11 hours total machine time. Material glued up cherry 3/4" thk. I am very pleased with the results. No machine issues at this time, however the A11 controller needs drastic improvements.

from what I can see in that pic it looks pretty good...any chance of closer/detail shots?
11 hours used to seem like forever to me...my perspective is quickly changing ;-p
I'm working on a file now that's showing an estimated cut time of over 40 hours (started at 77 hours ;-) and having a bear trying to figure out how to get it down to a more reasonable cut time...my brain hurts

I will post more prints after I apply the finish.

I will post more prints after I apply the finish. Could have fooled me...Surface looked so smooth I thought it was already finished ;-)

Your rough cut settings seem a bit off, too much RPM and not enough step over. You might see how much time you'd save with a rough cut of 1/4" 2 flute bit at 0.125" depth, 8K RPM, 150 IPM and a stepover of 0.125" (or maybe 0.1", I usually go 33-50% for roughing). How many flutes does your 1/16" ball mill have (for that RPM it should have three)? I think you can get your cut time down quite a bit and make your bits last longer with different cut parameters. Another thing I do when roughing in more delicate woods is to use a ball mill but tell the software it's an end mill, that leaves a little more support for the second operation instead of having a sharp corner.
