Before anyone asks I did look into this to no avail beforehand. I believe this is a common issue and hopefully a quick fix. I was running a cut and my Z - Axis only went about halfway down and then started cutting the pattern. I had seen this before and somehow knew it was going to grind into home and it did. If I don't stop it when it starts grinding the motor keeps spinning but not going anywhere. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would check your Z axis coupler to the stepper. Possibly just needs the set screws tightened. New couplers are relatively inexpensive and readily available if yours is broken. Good idea to have an extra one or two on hand at any rate.
