I try not to follow instructions without understanding them. Every Picture or video I've seen has the 4th axis rotary index mounted on the left back om the machine. To accomplish this, you are supposed to remove the first two spoil boards. Since most of my work has been, and will be, performed using the left front of the machine, I didn't want to lose this real estate. My method goes like this.
Slide the 5th and 6th spoil boards forward 1-2feet. Slide the tailstock in the place cleared. Do not install the 4jaw chuck as yet. Slide the rotary index into the slots that are cleared. Install an MT2 dead center into the headstock. Move the Y axis in the positive direction until it marks the end of travel. Clearance must be allowed for the 4 jaw chuck and 1/4-1/2" spacing for safety. Align the headstock with a square but don't fully tighten in place. Make sure that the point to the tailstock and the MT2 dead center in the headstock align. Cut a piece of mdf that is the same length as the distance between the tailstock and the 4th spoil board. This spacer will keep the tail stock parallel to the y axis. With the two points in alignment and with the square, tighten the headstock. You can now slide the tailstock to accommodate the length of your stock.
With the mt2 Center still in place, scribe another piece of mdf. This gives the position of Z 0.0. Mine actually measures 76.12mm from the machine bed. Cut the board to length. Registering the chosen tool down to this board is a quick way to zero your tool.
You can now install the 4 jaw chuck and proceed to have fun. I haven't cut my two spoil boards yet because I want to find the usual length of my stock. I want to keep them as long as possible.
this makes sense when I talk to myself in my basement. I hope it helps someone.
