Trophy: 3D carving on a live edge walnut slab

I took a photo and made a heightfield map relief sculpture. I traced it to create a mask, then carved it with a 30° vee-bit at 1/16" depth (max) and 1/32" stepover. It turned out nice. 






I scraped the board smooth after adding shellac to the carving, then just applied paste wax to the rest.

It turned out better than expected. They want me to do another one for a different competition. For the first test cut I did I used 1/4" pre-finished baltic birch ply, and the dark/light bands ended up falling in the perfect location to mimic shading on the figure:
