Can you provide software upgrade that would allow 4th axis controller to add functionality to the laser?

There are presently no firmware updates that would effect the controllers operation of the laser in any way.
This engraving laser simply operates in a ON or Off method....while it works very nicely for engraving logos and other high resolution clipart style images, it will not allow for grey scaling or the type of shading required for photo engraving.
However, by design its a simple, inexpensive LED laser....whereas most lasers that are used to produce photo quality engravings or to cut thin material (such as an Epilog CO2 laser) retail for far far higher costs.
