I purchased the festool dust extractor and it doesn't seem to me to be picking anything up I think it is the way we have it hooked to the axiom dust collector arm it is 4inches and the festool is about 1.5 inches does anyone use this and how did you hook the two together?

I really don't think it has enough air volume to work well enough to really be efficient. I have a 2 H.P. collector hooked up with a 4" hose and it works just fine. You need lots of air volume for the chips to be sucked up properly. The Festool would be great for collecting sanding dust.

I am using a regular Rigid brand shop vac from Home Depot. I bought a 4” to 2” adapter. Used some electrical tape to seal the joints and unused screw holes on the dust collection arm assembly. Seems to be working pretty good for me. Let me know if you want pics of what I did and I will post them. Russ

I have a 1.5 HP ShopFox DC and it works fine. I also have a Festool Midi stationed nearby to pick up all the loose dust that the dust collector misses. I love the midi, but I don't think it's really suited for adapting to the dust collector shoe. It would obviously pick up some dust that flies near the opening, but I doubt that it will pickup much dust that settles on the work piece. Depending on the bit and operation, it might have to pick up chips from 4" above the workpiece.

You are pretty much NEVER going to want to have any section of the connections to the dust collector SMALLER as the flow approaches the collector. This is exactly backwards to the physics involved in the airflow. If you're set on using the Festool, you should eliminate all of the 4" hose and take the smaller hose all the way to the dust shoe. Even then, it's likely not going to work the way you'd like for it to. You'd be better off getting the cheapest Harbor Freight collector out there and running the 4" all the way. If you can return the Festool, I would do so and spend the (significant) dollars on something that's sized properly.

What wouold you guys suggest as a replacement I cant send it back but I can use it in the shop for other things. I readc it was great is why I bought it. Now I would like some opinions and I don't have 3000 to spend. :-) I would like to stay around 1000.

It works great and is under your price point. If that is the only machinery you are using it for, you could probably get by with the 1HP unit. Were I starting over, I would try to get a unit with the cyclone option, that separates chips from dust. I think that they are much easier to empty. Mine has a plastic storage bag that works fine, but is a pain to reinstall after emptying. By the way, I ordered mine through Amazon and it came without a manual. I contacted Amazon and they sent me a new unit and told me to keep the first one. Meanwhile, I downloaded the manual from the ShopFox website.

I have the Ultra-Quiet type cyclone dust collector from Grizzly. Got the HEPA filter so I can run everything down in my basement. Nice unit. www.grizzly.com/dust-collectors
