I'm new to using the cnc and have been researching the elusive speed and feed recommendations. I imagine it is elusive because it depends on material, type of carving, machine being used as well as the type of bit. In general, I carve into hard wood (ie walnut) with the 1 hp iconic 6. I've looked at the manufacturers recommendations for their particular bit but I believe these recommendations are based on industrial machines and probably not ideal for my cnc. Is there a rule of thumb that I need to be following with the manufactures recommendations? How can I tell if the speed and feeds are correct by evaluating quality of cut?
Thanks for your help, Steve

Hi Steve, You will find lots of answers to your question if you use the search function at the top of this forum page. A real general answer is that you need to be having chips generated, not fine dust. Chips remove heat from the cut. There's your homework assignment. I also monitor heat during a cut with an infrared thermometer. It seldom reads over 80 degrees F during a cut. Bob
