Hello everyone.
My name is Nathan, and I am new to this forum. I don't (as yet) have my Axiom, but WILL have it before much longer. I, initially, wanted the Axiom Pro V5, but decided against it - owing to being unsure as to whether or not I'd be able to get the unit through our basement door. So, I opted to get the Axiom Precision Iconic 8, which ships with its gantry folded - which would definitely allow for transport into my basement shop. I have scoured the internet for anything that I could find out about reviews on this unit, but came up somewhat short. However, there was a fair bit more info (videos, and reviews) on a very similar CNC machine - the i2R offering, which (I'm given to understand) is essentially the same machine, but with the UCCNC controller, as opposed to the handheld DSP controller for the Axiom.
I come from having had a Carvewright machine, which wasn't too bad of a unit. But it was like having a worrisome, temperamental & pigheaded mate - exhibiting halting issues much more often than it should have. I wanted/badly needed something better, and feel that I am embarking on just the tool that I will be able to work with. There's nothing 'pipe-dreamish' about my entrance into the relationship with my Axiom. Yes - it's a near certainty that I will make some mistakes. Yes - it is understandable that there may be some encountered issues with the unit itself. The former is something that I will have to address, within myself. The latter (I'm sure) would be defects that would be corrected by Axiom (under the warranty period) - OR by technical guidance, in the event of an after warranty failure. I am just so anxious to get it, and am studying hard to gain a decent handle on the Vectric (Aspire) program.
And if I may, I'd like to ask one question two questions:
1). MuscleChuck.
This chuck affords the opportunity to use 1/2" shank bits. Its cost doesn't demand too deep of a reach into one's pocket, and would allow for those times (such as with spoil board flattening) when I would like to use the larger bit, by which to cut down on time. But, with the unit's spindle - which is only 1hp, I don't know if such a task might be too taxing on it. I would like to know the opinions on this.
2). Long Carving Jobs.
I just recently read where someone had a very detailed sign-carving job , which translated to 30hrs of machining time. Now, everything that I've come across - regarding Pausing carving jobs, had the issuance of warnings against leaving the machine in a paused state, for long. But, then I have also read where shutting a job down - before completion - would be very problematic, because of the machine not being able to pick where the job was left off.
I'm hoping that (just maybe) I misread that. But I am relatively sure that there is a way to return to a job. I'll just need to know how to go about it.
Advanced thanks.
