Many of the active members can attest to the presence of spam within the forum.
In the past, we relied on Admin and other users to note these spam posts and flag them for removal.
We have avoided making some of the necessary changes, in an effort to prevent any restrictions on users. Recently, the number for these posts have increased and requiring that wee finally take steps.
Moving forward, all new membership registration will be subject to Admin approval. We will request that new members tell us a little about their machine or the machine that they are considering (common for social medial user groups). In addition, guest accounts that once did not require registration are now prohibited.
We hope that these changes will improve user experience.
If you have any suggestions on ways that we can improve the Forum, please let us know.
Thank you,
Admin

That is definitely needed. Excellent.
As far as guests, if you don't join, then don't ask questions. You gotta' put forth at least some effort.

Would consider it more meaningful if this wasn't y our banner. "Support the services you love. $2.99 gets you unlimited ad-free browsing of all the Pro-Board forums you are a member of."

I'll admit that requiring log in to access the forum is not ideal. However, in most forums that I participate in...there are several safeguards in place to protect users from unwanted spam.
With traditional forums, you may be able to view some of the posts...but would be unable to post without logging in. Where with other social media forums (Facebook User Groups), logging in is unnecessary because you are already logged in to Facebook...but it is a closed group with questions that must be answered before admission is approved.
These steps have proven to help keep other groups free of unwanted spam posts and identity theft issues....
That said, we are open to suggestion..
I'd like to ask our users to share their thoughts: Do you feel that requiring registration is unwarranted...essentially, that the forum should remain open for unregistered users to access and post (which unfortunately means that anyone can view, post etc)? Or do you feel that these measures (while a pain) are a necessary step to ensuring forum security?
Options with the form host are limited....but please let us know if you have any suggestions.
*WRT the Add Free option. This is purely a ProBoard Forum thing...and is not something that Axiom has any control over. To the best of my knowledge, it just removes the add banners that appear at the top and bottom of the forum page.
At no point will Axiom ever ask anyone to pay for access to the forum or support.

Registration required to post, not required to read boards. This seems reasonable if its an option

We had originally believed that there were global permissions in place to prevent guests from posting....
I have no problem admitting that what I believed to be "global" settings, where recently found to be settings that would need to be applied to each board individually (discovered our fellow forum administrator, Mezalick).
The intention with these recent changes where to prevent further spam by requiring registration to post, however, these global settings appear to over ride those that are actually board specific creating an environment where no access of the forum was possible to unregistered or accounts with pending approvals.
Long story short, while many of the spam posts have been created by registered member accounts....we are going to remove the registration requirement to access the forum.
Under the new settings, this should allow unregistered guests full access to view forum threads only. It will still require registration for any who would like to post, etc.
*WRT: the need for larger download space for pictures etc., we will take a look at what can be options are available with ProBoards.

Regarding upload size...ProBoards will most likely always have some limitations, but we have increased the 3MB limitation to 5MB with a max of 16 files per post.
