Very clever in the design! I was wondering when someone would make a modification like that. The gantry system on this machine is so strong, I can see this being a good alternative to buying a different brand of machine to do that sort of work. I would assume that when you are not making something like the cases, you go back to the standard mounting to avoid any stress on the gantry.
The guys at Axiom are probably going nuts after seeing this mod!

I like it! I've seen similar things done for other machines, but not the Axiom line. I was trying to think of a way to do this before, but never put a lot of thought into it, plus I don't have those kind of metalwork skills (I have none in fact). Although I do know a few welders, and maybe I can beg or barter something. Getting the CAD files (for the mounting holes) would be nice.
I'm not saying you could make a ton of money selling that extension device, but you could probably make a ton of money selling that extension thing Brian. Warranty shmarantee! If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

Once the machine is past the 1 year warranty, it won't matter anyway.

It might be a good way for cutting dovetails, etc.

Allan might have to consider that possibility I could offer them in different lengths, the less reach, the more rigid, say for dovetail type of work thanks for the idea Allan !

Yeah, I didn't factor in the cantilever effect (on longer lengths of extensions), so maybe a 6" reach instead of the ~8" that you used. I would likely want the shorter distance myself, but it might be worthwhile to have a standard 8" one, since once you have it mounted, you might wish you had gone with the 8", for example.

It would be great if you, Brian (or someone else) would make these for sale! Not being able to work "over the edge" (for example, dovetails) is one of the (few) downsides of Axiom's machines.

Brian, Very well thought-out, engineered and practical solution to finishing a job. Once you got the opportunity to capture a new job, repeat work is all about precision and repeatability to keep that job. It is important that you and your experience, mechanical knowledge, along with a good dose of safety/caution doesn't exceed machine limits while succeeding is awesome!!!!!
