Z won't zero manually.

I'm attempting to configure a marking pen to do some plotting and need to zero Z as per the Widgetworks instructions. No problem until I get to the requirement of manually setting Z-0. I get this message:

"There is in the machine coordinate state, can't set the workpiece original please switch to the workpiece state." What are they referring to? I looking over the manual and found nothing along the lines of a workpiece state. I get this message regardless of any Z position. Z sets up just fine with the puck in other applications but I realize it can't be used when zeroing a pen.
