Okay, please forgive my lack of experience and probably stupid issues that I am having. I received my Iconic 4 and was very excited to get it all set up and begin. Plenty of cuss words and some throwing of stuff later..... I'm very stressed and discouraged. I am using VC desktop and I'm simply taking my saved files that are on my flash drive and trying to start a demo job on the machine. The first times I tried, the files were showing up on the RICHAUTO. Now everytime I save a file it's not showing up on the Rich Auto. I tried multiple times, using what I thought was the normal, logical way to save these files. My flash drive is 16gb, is that too big for some reason? I'm very confused and red in the face. Also, the first times the files showed up, I couldn't get the bit to touch the material. I changed the depth lower three times and the the spindle stayed at the same depth. Anyones input on this would be greatly appreciated. This is somehow turning into rocket science. Thanks again, John.

Most of us never use a flash drive that big The ones I almost always use are only 2 gig and others I have are only 256 meg. These drives are what Axiom machines seem to like. You really don't need a large flash drive. Most projects never take up more than 1-2 meg.

That thread that Gerry links to saved me a ton of searching (for smaller capacity memory sticks). I had exactly 2 working USB sticks (PC is in house, shop is in garage) and whenever I lost one, I put on a search that rivaled a military operation, since I knew finding a working replacement (locally) was improbable. Now, I just buy multi-packs of the smallest, cheapest ones at WalMart etc and format them in FAT32 (that's the mystery, folks..... it's a shame that Axiom can't be bothered to buy a shipping container of obsolete ones (i.e anything under 1GB) and pack 6 in with each machine, OR put it in the manual, in HUGE RED FONT, since I think that issue (USB memory sticks) seems to be the number 1 (with a bullet!) n00b issue (can't get handheld controller to "see" their files, and has likely lead to many bouts of rage and/or drinking). But that would be admitting there is a problem/issue, and Axiom doesn't do "responsibility" particularly well (probably a US legal thing, since y'all sue each other over sideways glances nowadays )).

Well your help is appreciated and the information is good to know. I'll give that a shot. Thanks again.

This problem comes from the Chinese using 'borrowed' antique software and hardware designs. This problem ONLY happens with out-of-date software and hardware USB designs and firmware drivers. If you look around, you'll notice that virtually none of the modern (last 10 years) USB devices have this problem.

I been using a Toshiba 32 gig. Flash drive just because I have it. Holds my program carve files and a number of production run 4x4 sheet files.
Make sure your z heights in v carve material set up are set correctly and your post processer when saving to flash drive. It helps to stick with a z height set up (material, or machine bed) and stay with it for a bit, it helps avoid tool crashes if you don’t remember what each file was set up.

I bought a pack of 10 Sandisk 8GB drives. 1st one work flawlessly, 2nd one the toolpaths stopped 1/2 way through the cut. loaded same toolpaths onto drive #1 and worked just fine. having those cuts stop 1/2 way through was very costly since I was using some beautiful pieces of cherry. Seems the quality of these drives is questionable.

Seems the quality of these drives is questionable. You should save longer toolpaths (over 30 minutes) to the controller, and not run directly from USB. I have never had a path fail when running from USB, but I limit those toolpaths to simple things (profile pass to cut out something, or similar). I will admit that initially I was put out by not being able to use a PC to control my CNC (like I did with my ShapeOko2 and NWA Pirahna), BUT I have never had to worry about Windows crapping the bed mid-cut (I do very lengthy carvings, over 6 hours on average, and some totalling over 24 hours). The only issues I have had with using the controller are the USB memory stick problems (not formatted properly) and operator errors, and having to do the odd reboot so the machine recognizes a previously working memory stick. As an aside, I would LOVE to be able to hook up an after-market controller (HUST, for example) to my machines (I have 2, an AR4Pro+ and AR8Pro+), and admittedly, I haven't researched it, but I like (not love) my Axiom machines, and would like to stick with the same platform, just with a better controller (able to use filenames longer than 8 characters, ability to see how much time is left on a run, ability to preview toolpath on screen (I do a LOT of projects in both landscape and portrait mode, depending on length of wood I am using, and I have ruined a few projects by not realizing I was about to run a horizontal (landscape) toolpath on a piece I had in vertical (portrait) aspect, and the lack of characters available doesn't help for meaningful filenames. If Axiom sticks to the same, dated controller for future releases, I can't see purchasing from them, especially if/when other companies in the same price range (very few, sadly) adapt to evolving technologies (pretty sure 8-character limitation is at least a few years old....) That's the secret.... FAT32 format on any flash drive you put into the RICH Auto Pendant. I have used small 2gb and large 64gb thumb drives and just made sure they were quick formatted FAT32 before saving my .mmg toolpaths. Never had a problem.

The large drives, even formatted as FAT32 don't always seem to work. I've now got a handful of those.
